Sugar nights is Khadija Bhuiyan and Michael Donaldson. The high-school friends, having high musical compatibility and an affinity for a variety of instruments, decided to form an eclectic electronic group under the name Sugar Nights. For their sultry track, “Untitled”, the two teamed up with Richard Vergez to put together a time-synced video collage that seems to perfectly translate the song’s dark moods:
If you like what you hear, hop over to the Sugar Nights’ Soundcloud. Most of their tracks tease with seductive moods, fluctuating between dark/witchy trip-hop and more Miami-flavored house music (hints of the 90s?). Their recent self-titled EP dropped this year under Overthrow Music Authority, and has been well received both by Miami’s indie/electronic scene as well as the interweb’s blogger underground.
In usual Brasky fashion, we got after them with some questions.
BRASKY: Did you guys start this project in Miami- how did it all start for you?
Sugar Nights: Well, we have known each other since high school, so we’ve been friends for a long time. Both of us moved away and lived in other cities for a while, but ended up coming back to south Florida. Between the two of us, we play a few instruments, and both of us played in bands growing up. During the mid to late nineties, in addition to grunge and alternative, we both were really into trip-hop artists, such as Portishead, Massive Attack, and Sneaker Pimps, and later started getting into underground electronic music. About three years ago we decided to start an electronic project together, and it all kind of started around then.
BRSKY: In the process of doing some research, I find that you’ve done radio sets. If these are common- are they more preferable than live shows?
SN: We haven’t done too many dj sets, but they are definitely fun, a lot less stressful. You are playing other peoples music and not your own so you can kind of enjoy yourself a little more. We do enjoy performing live though. The live element is really missing in a lot of electronic acts these days so it’s definitely cool to be on stage doing our thing. I guess you can saw we like doing both.BRKY: What Miami venues do you usually play at- who do you usually play with?
SN: We’ve played a couple of venues, Transit Lounge, Bar (RIP), and we had our E.P release party at Grand Central. We have a tentative upcoming show at Bardot on December 28th.BKY: I hear a lot of influences in your music (Witch-house, house, dubstep, etc). Since I cant really describe your music, can you give us insight on your influences and sound?
SN: Our E.P. is definitely a combination of several influences. Both of us listen to a variety of genres, so it was hard to create a sound that wasn’t all over the place. We are definitely inspired by 90’s rave, post-dubstep, house, and witch house just to name a few. We wanted to create a dark, moody, dancey feel and tend to describe our sound as “dark rave”.BK: There is certainly a dark element to your music that can’t be dismissed. I can see that you guys are akin to a dark aesthetic both in your music and in the way you promote the group. Would you agree with this?
SN: Yeah, we’ve always been a little goth, it just comes naturally, we can’t really get away from it. What can we say? We really enjoy music with a dark element.B: We’re impressed by how well the “Untitled” video compliments the song and captures its moods. Who produced it and what made you come up with the video’s peculiar visual concept?
SN: “Untitled” was produced by our friend Richard Vergez. We saw the music videos he created for his project, Möthersky, awhile back and we loved it. His style is distinct, dark, and just awesome. We gave him pretty much full control over the video, with just a couple of really vague ideas. Needless to say, we were very pleased with the result. He did an excellent job portraying the different moods in the song. Definitely check out his music, art, and videos.b: Being in Miami and playing the kind of music you do, Sugar Nights is bound for indie success. What are your plans for the future of Sugar Nights?
SN: We plan to release another E.P. early next year. We want to play lots of shows, keep making music and evolving our sound, and hopefully embark on a tour.
