Set and Setting 2012 Spring U.S. Tour + Interview

Set and Setting describes the context for psychoactive and particularly psychedelic drug experiences: one's mindset and the setting in which the user has the experience.

set and setting

Set and Setting is the psychedelic post-rock music project of Saint Petersburg, Florida natives Shane Handal, Mark Etherington, Stephen Handal, and John Kreft. They're kicking off their first U.S. tour in March and working on their debut album, scheduled to be released at the end of summer. Despite only having shared a 15-minute track on Bandcamp, they've captured our attention with their canorous, ambling instrumentals. If you're a fan of Explosions in the Sky or Mogwai, be sure to check out their music and catch them on tour.

Listen to set and setting on Bandcamp.

Tonight (February 29) at 8:00 P.M. on WMNF, Set and Setting will be joining the Grand National Championships Crew to premier a new track previously recorded with Alastair. Don't miss it!

Interview:

BRASKY: Who are Set and Setting? Tell us about the name of your music project.
Set and Setting: Set and Setting is Shane Handal, Mark Etherington, Stephen Handal, and John Kreft. Set and Setting refers to the mental state/mindset (set) and your physical environment (setting) in a psychoactive experience. You can find more on that through Google or Wikipedia, so I won't try and explain it in my own words. However, I've always thought of it beyond the psychoactive state, and applied it to every day life. Your set and setting is what affects everything in any state, psychoactice or not. Music definitely affects your set and setting; make it more dramatic, or intensify it, etc. So, being an instumental band, we saw it fitting.

BRASKY: Have you been on tour before? What are you looking forward to the most during this tour? What types of things do you think you will do to help pass the time, when you aren't playing?
Set and Setting: Set and Setting went on a 7 day Florida tour in November but this is our first U.S. tour. Playing shows across the country to people who have never seen your band before and building awesome friendships with new people is one of the best experiences ever, definitely looking forward to that the most. Of course, traveling and seeing cool stuff is right up there too. Walking around in the city or drinking passes the time quickly when you're in the city you're supposed to be in, but when we're in the van, listening to music, reading, angry birds, movies, and naps are always great. Right now, I'm reading Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, but I think I'll be done with that by the time we hit the road.

BRASKY: Will there be any improvised music during the tour or will you just be playing tracks from your upcoming summer album?
Set and Setting: No we never improvise. It may seem like we do sometimes because of the drone and repetition, but we have a specific song structure for every part. Sometimes we may extend it a few times in the heat of the moment, but it's typically the same thing every time. We are playing all brand new unrecorded stuff on this tour. The only ones that have seen it, were the ones that went to the show we played with Floor last week.

BRASKY: Tell us about the album that's to be released at the end of summer. Should we expect to hear more music like Trails?
Set and Setting: Hopefully we will have it out by the end of the summer, I'm not sure how we will be financially to make it happen by then though. We also want to be touring consistently so that has to be kept in mind too. Our music has progressed pretty dramatically since Trails. The song was about 6-8 months old before we even recorded it, so it seems ancient to us now. If Trails is the only thing heard by us previously, I think people will be surprised by our progression. Our new stuff has been a lot more carefully thought out, and we have been gradually getting heavier, louder, and darker toned as well. We're constantly pushing and expanding our limits, but still not doing anything that we don't feel is "us". Trails was a stepping stone, and it's only getting better in my opinion. Come see us at our tour kick off show at Fubar in St. Pete next Thursday, March 8th to hear it!
